Cobalt has magnetic characteristics and is classified as a transition metal. This metal is normally found associated with other metals such as nickel and platinum (PGE – elements of the platinum group).
Cobalt is often found in nature in a +2 oxidation state. Like nickel, cobalt is linked to mafic (40 ppm Co) and ultramafic (150 ppm Co) rocks.
Of course, cobalt can be found in a number of minerals. The most famous of these is cobaltite. This mineral is a cobalt arsenic sulfide characteristic of hydrothermal and metamorphic cobalt deposits.
