Ore from
Cobalt

Which is

Cobalt has magnetic characteristics and is classified as a transition metal. This metal is normally found associated with other metals such as nickel and platinum (PGE – elements of the platinum group).

Cobalt is often found in nature in a +2 oxidation state. Like nickel, cobalt is linked to mafic (40 ppm Co) and ultramafic (150 ppm Co) rocks.

Of course, cobalt can be found in a number of minerals. The most famous of these is cobaltite. This mineral is a cobalt arsenic sulfide characteristic of hydrothermal and metamorphic cobalt deposits.

What is it for

Today cobalt is widely used in the production of special alloys and superalloys, as well as in the oil industry as a catalyst, also in the treatment of cancer and more recently it has been used in the production of batteries for hybrid vehicles. It is believed that in the future cobalt will be a cheap alternative that will replace platinum in the process of producing hydrogen fuel from water.

Production

Currently, the world production of cobalt is approximately 110 thousand tons per year.

Price

In April/2022 the price of cobalt was USD 81,500 p/ton.
