Manganese

Manganese does not have a satisfactory substitute in most of its applications, which are related to the use in alloys in the metallurgical industry, and in smaller applications such as in the process of phosphating with manganese, as well as in the manufacture of batteries and cells.

1) Manganese is essential in the manufacture of iron and steel, due to its properties as a sulfur fixer, deoxidizer, and in the manufacture of metal alloys.

2) The second largest application of manganese is in alloys with aluminum.

3) It is also used in the organometallic compound used as an additive in unleaded gasoline to increase the octane level and reduce the effects of engine explosion. Manganese oxide IV, or manganese dioxide, is used as a reagent in organic chemistry as an oxidizing agent for benzyl alcohols.

4) From a biological point of view, manganese is a trace element for all forms of life, in which it has both structural and enzymatic functions. The reverse transcriptase of many retroviruses contains manganese, and the best-known examples of polypeptides are arginase, diphtheria toxin, and manganese superoxide dismutase. The human body contains approximately 12 mg of the element, most of which is stored in the bones.
